Fin rot is the most common disease in captive bettas. It’s caused by bacterial infection and almost always triggered by poor water quality. The good news is that fin rot caught early is straightforward to treat — and entirely preventable with proper tank maintenance. This guide covers how to identify fin rot, treat it, and stop it from coming back.

What Is Fin Rot?

Fin rot is a bacterial infection that causes the fins to deteriorate progressively. It typically starts at the fin edges and works inward. Left untreated, it can consume the entire fin and eventually reach the body, at which point it becomes body rot — a much more serious condition. Fin rot is not contagious to humans but can spread to other fish in the same tank.

What Fin Rot Looks Like

  • Ragged, frayed, or uneven fin edges
  • Fins appear to be receding or shrinking
  • Dark, brown, or white border along the fin edges
  • In advanced cases, holes or chunks missing from fins
  • In severe cases, redness or inflammation at the fin base

Early fin rot is easy to miss — the changes are subtle. Check your betta’s fins regularly against photos or your memory of what they looked like when healthy.

Fin Rot vs. Fin Biting

Bettas sometimes bite their own fins, especially when stressed or bored. Fin biting produces clean, sharp edges — like a piece was neatly removed. Fin rot produces ragged, uneven, or discolored edges. If the damage looks clean and appeared suddenly, fin biting is more likely. If the edges are ragged and the damage is progressing gradually, fin rot is more likely.

What Causes Fin Rot

Fin rot is almost always caused or worsened by poor water quality. The bacteria associated with fin rot are commonly species of Aeromonas, Pseudomonas, and Flavobacterium — present in most aquariums at low levels, they become pathogenic when the fish’s immune system is suppressed by:

  • Elevated ammonia or nitrite
  • High nitrate levels from infrequent water changes
  • Temperature too low (below 76°F)
  • Chronic stress from aggressive tankmates, excessive flow, or overcrowding
  • Physical fin damage from fin-nipping tankmates

How to Treat Fin Rot

Step 1: Improve Water Quality First

This is the most important step and the one most people skip. Medication alone will not cure fin rot if the underlying water quality problem is not addressed. Perform a 25–50% water change, clean the substrate, and test your water. Ammonia and nitrite should be 0 ppm. Nitrate should be under 20 ppm.

Step 2: Assess Severity

  • Mild fin rot (slight fraying, no discoloration, fins not significantly shorter): Water quality improvement alone may be sufficient. Monitor closely over 1–2 weeks. Fins should stop receding and begin regrowing.
  • Moderate fin rot (noticeable recession, dark or white border, progressing): Treat with a broad-spectrum antibacterial medication.
  • Severe fin rot (significant fin loss, redness at base, body involvement): Treat aggressively with antibacterial medication and consider a veterinary consultation.

Step 3: Medication (If Needed)

For moderate to severe fin rot, treat with a broad-spectrum antibacterial medication. Common effective options include:

  • Kanaplex (Seachem) — effective against gram-negative bacteria, can be used in tank water or food-soaked
  • Furan-2 (API) — broad-spectrum, effective for fin rot
  • Maracyn (Fritz) — erythromycin-based, effective for gram-positive bacteria

Follow dosing instructions carefully. Complete the full course of treatment even if the fins appear to be improving. Remove activated carbon from the filter during treatment as it will absorb medication.

Step 4: Monitor Regrowth

After successful treatment, fin tissue will begin to regrow. New fin growth appears as clear or slightly lighter tissue at the fin edges. Full regrowth can take weeks to months depending on the severity of the damage. Maintain excellent water quality throughout the recovery period.

Do not trim damaged fins. Healthy fin tissue will regrow naturally once the infection is under control, and trimming can increase stress or create additional entry points for bacteria.

How to Prevent Fin Rot

  • Maintain water quality: Test weekly, perform regular partial water changes, keep ammonia and nitrite at 0 ppm
  • Keep temperature stable: 78–80°F supports immune function
  • Avoid fin-nipping tankmates: Physical damage creates entry points for bacteria
  • Remove sharp decor: Plastic plants with sharp edges can tear fins — use silk or live plants instead
  • Reduce stress: Stable environment, appropriate tankmates, adequate hiding spots
